Treatment of Periprosthetic Femoral Fractures

Component exchange with re-implantation of a revision stem or total femur replacement is a standardised, reliable concept for treatment of periprosthetic femur fractures. The functional results are good and the rate of complications low. The possibility of increasing the degree of weight-bearing at an early stage or even immediate full weight-bearing greatly facilitates early postoperative mobilisation of the most elderly and sometimes polypathic patients.

The high rate of stem loosening at the time of fracture, the mainly poor quality of patients‘ bone and possible implant damage make exchange surgery the method of choice in the majority of cases.
